A Reimagined Classic

I love Jane Austen books. I also love reading contemporary novels. So, when I found this modern retelling of Austen's Sense and Sensibility, I was pretty excited to read it.Not only is the title perfect, it's a great story. The author, Hillary Manton Lodge, did an amazing job weaving the elements and structure of the original novel into a modern-day story. I always love seeing the ways authors bring these old stories into our current time period.Just like Sense and Sensibility, Jane of Austin is about two sisters who are left destitute and must figure out how to survive while caring for their little sister. Jane and Celia take on  all sorts of challenges as they move to a new city and into a unique living situation, find new income sources, meet new men, and navigate the everyday challenge of simply getting along with your sister. If you've read Sense and Sensibility, I think you'll really enjoy and appreciate the way Manton Lodge retold the story. It's charming and fun and creative, while adhering to the familiar Austen story-telling structure. If you haven't read Sense and Sensibility, I think it's still a fun story that you would enjoy reading. (Also, you should probably go ahead and read Sense and Sensibility.)I love a good retelling because it allows you to enjoy a beloved story in a new way. It's definitely on my writing bucket list to someday write a modern-day retelling of one of my favorite classics. I have a book in mind, now all I have to do is find a way to drop my favorite characters into the modern world. I can't wait to do it though!
