The Perfect Table
Hopefully, you’ve seen the new covers for the first two books in my Clara Evans series. If so, I’m sure you’ve noticed the tasty looking food on the front covers.
When I first threw out the idea of new covers, I knew I wanted to keep the cover pictures simple and clean. The idea of doing food made sense, since the books are set in a diner, so I started looking into options.
Some indie authors use stock photos for cover photos, and I wasn’t opposed to that. I just couldn’t find the look I wanted. I moved on and looked for restaurants that might work for the background, but once again couldn’t find exactly what I wanted.
I talked to my photographer friend and decided that if I could find the right props, we could just set up in her house and take the pictures there. So, I spent a weekend hunting antique stores and thrift stores for the right props, and I found a lot of what I needed. I also borrowed a few items from church and bought the last few items from Amazon.
The real problem though was a table. I had this picture in my head of an older style table top to fit the diner theme, but I couldn’t find one anywhere.
Then, after days of searching for the perfect table, I walked into my parents basement looking for a book, and lo and behold, the exact kind of table I wanted was sitting at the foot of the stairs. (Apparently, it was leftover from the previous owners.) We cleared and cleaned off the table and added it to the list of items I would drag to my friend’s house for our photoshoot.
On the day of our photoshoot, I ran to a few stores and restaurants to buy the food we needed for our pictures, and we were set!
We dragged my perfect table into Cara’s dining room, shoving her table aside, and we went to work styling the look we wanted. Despite the fact that she is “not a product photographer” (as she said more than once that day), Cara got some amazing pictures for each cover.
I’m so incredibly happy with how they turned out. These pictures for sure make me hungry...
