Fiction Friday #3 - Even More Kid Classic
I continued my quest to read some classics this week and busted out Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Both of these were great books!!I can't quite figure out how I never read Little House on the Prairie. It seems like such an iconic American tale of the exploration of the unsettled land "out west". I loved it though. I'm now thinking I should go back and read Little House in the Big Woods, which is the first book in the Little House series. I was always under the impression that Little House on the Prairie was the first book, so now I need to back track a bit to start at the beginning and get to read through all of them in the right order. One aspect of the book series that has always confused me a bit is how it's classified because it's almost always listed as a historical fiction book, but I knew that it was at least a semi-autobiographical look at Laura Ingalls Wilder's life. As I read more about the books, I found that it's considered fiction because she did change certain facts (like their ages) to make the characters more believable, so technically, it's not actually a biography. However, Wilder initially wrote them to preserve some of her family's history after the death of her mom and sister as well as an effort to help grow her family's income after the stock market crash wiped out their investments.Whatever the reason and whatever the genre, I'm just glad she wrote them. After reading only one, I can guarantee that I will read them all and enjoy them!!Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson is one of those books that was listed as a children's classic that seems a bit too intense for kids, but maybe that's just me. Don't get me wrong, I thought the book was great! I truly enjoyed the adventure it took me on of travelling by ship and dealing with pirates and hunting for treasure! In the book, a young boy named Jim finds a treasure map and some respectable adults he knows decide to take a ship and go find the treasure. However, they accidentally bring a ruthless pirate along who, with most of the crew, commit mutiny in order to get the treasure for themselves. So Jim has to figure out how to get them out of the mess safely, hopefully while finding the treasure in the process. It truly is an adventure, but I definitely wouldn't have wanted to be on that ship! After I read it, I looked up to see how many film adaptations there were (tons!) and found that one of them has Christian Bale as Jim, so I went out and found a copy! I suppose you can all guess what I will be enjoying tonight! :)That, my friends, is what I have been reading this week! Have you read anything good recently? What do you recommend I read next?
